CA ProStart Cup

The CA ProStart Cup is an electrifying event that puts high school culinary students to the ultimate test. On March 19-20 in Pomona, students will develop and present a proposal for a new restaurant in the BJ’s Restaurant Management Cup. Culinary teams have one hour to prepare a three-course meal in the Johnny Rockets Culinary Cup. What’s at stake? More than $2.3 million in available scholarships and the chance to represent California at the National ProStart Invitational.

High school students from throughout California will get the chance to compete in front of leading industry mentors, including Carlito Jocson, co-founder and executive chef of Yard House Restaurants, John State, executive chef of Disneyland Resorts and Parks, and Michele Lange, director of training and development at The Habit Burger Grill.

The event features both culinary and management competitions designed to test the students’ knowledge and skill:

  • Johnny Rockets Culinary Cup: Participants have just one hour to prepare a starter, entrée and dessert using only two butane burners. Competitors must calculate the cost of their recipes and are judged on knife skills, teamwork, safety, sanitation and communication.
  • BJ’s Restaurant Management Cup: Participants must prepare a business proposal for a new restaurant concept including marketing tactics, a menu, restaurant design, and organizational structure.
