In a marriage made in taste-bud heaven, Ruby’s Diner Inc. has teamed up with legendary Santa Cruz ice cream shop Marianne’s to offer super-premium, handmade cones and cups that have been pleasing palates since 1947.

The Ruby’s Diner on Coast Highway in Laguna Beach is the first location in the Irvine-based organization’s collection of iconic 1940s-themed restaurants to scoop up Marianne’s ice cream. The debut there of Marianne’s ice cream in early May marks Marianne’s introduction into the Southern California market.

Marianne’s hard-packed ice cream has a 16 percent butterfat, the mark of a premium brand. Its precise ingredients and style of making have been closely guarded secrets for more than six decades. Marianne’s will also be introduced at Ruby’s Huntington Beach pier location in late May, followed by the Ruby’s 17th Street location in Costa Mesa, currently being remodeled into a new 1960s-themed Ruby’s concept.

Privately held Marianne’s still occupies its original location in a bright-red building at 1020 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz. Founder Tom Becker named the ice cream shop after his daughters, Mary and Anne.

The three Ruby’s Diners that will serve Marianne’s premium creations will, like all Ruby’s, continue to serve their popular variety of soft-serve shakes, sundaes and other creamy desserts. Customers now will be able to enjoy Marianne’s Ice Cream while dining at Ruby’s or pop in, buy a cone, cup or sundae, and take it on the go to include a hand-packed pint for home. Prices range from $2.49 to $8.49 for a deluxe banana split.

Flavors of Marianne’s Ice Cream available at Ruby’s Diners include the brand’s signature flavor and fan favorite, “10-20,” which consists of caramel ice cream, fudge and Oreo cookies. Other flavors include Northern Oregon Blackberry, Mint Chip, Coffee Almond Fudge, Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, Strawberry and Rainbow Sherbet.

Each month, Ruby’s Diners will feature four special flavors of Marianne’s Ice Cream, and any single or double scoop can be transformed into a sundae by adding hot fudge, almonds, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Banana splits and floats also are available.
