In Memoriam | Phyllis Ann Marshall

Phyllis Ann Marshall

It’s sad for all of us as we remember the life and legacy of chef, business owner, pioneer, educator, mother, grandmother and all-around wonder woman Phyllis Ann Marshall. Her culinary education began at Cornell University where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Food Chemistry, after which she attended La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in France where she studied under the likes of Julia Child. She also enrolled in culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in London. Following her education, Phyllis Ann Marshall played a huge role in the development of the Southern California restaurant scene for over 40 years.

Her contributions to culinary Southern California include founding her own culinary academy in San Marino, opening the award-winning restaurant Mr. Stox in Anaheim, founding her own company called FoodPower, which offered expert restaurant consulting, and creating the Restaurant Management Certificate Program at University of California, Irvine. Due to her excellent work in the field, Phyllis Ann received many awards such as the Pacesetter Award as Entrepreneur of the Year. She also was a member of a number of culinary groups including the National Restaurant Association, Food Service Consultants Society, Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and Les Dames d’Escoffier International, a group celebrating women working in the food industry. A great influence and inspiration to all those that she knew, within the industry and beyond, Phyllis Ann Marshall will be missed by many.

At the age of eighty, Phyllis Ann Marshall passed on August 23, 2017 at her home in Costa Mesa. She leaves behind a lovely and large family including her three children, six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Phyllis Ann lived life to the fullest and touched the lives of all those around her. We honor her memory by celebrating all that she achieved in her culinary career and are eternally grateful for the contributions she made to the industry and to Great Taste Magazine.
