California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Director Jacob Appelsmith has announced that the department has budgeted $3 million this year for a grant program to help ABC and 50 local law enforcement agencies reduce alcohol-related harm in California.
ABC will administer grants to local police and sheriff’s departments through the Alcohol Policing Partnership Program (APP). The APP Program was created in 1995 to strengthen partnerships between ABC and local law enforcement agencies in order to address problematic businesses, keep alcohol away from minors, and implement education, prevention, and enforcement strategies.
The funds will be used to reduce the number of alcohol sales to minors, obviously intoxicated patrons, and other alcohol-related harm that negatively impact communities.
ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith said, “Too many young people are killed in alcohol-related incidents every year. If we can limit youth access to alcohol, and prevent service to obviously intoxicated patrons, then we can save lives and strengthen communities”.
The APP Program has distributed over $50 million to local law enforcement to address alcohol-related crime since it was created 25 years ago. For a list of grant agencies, go to the ABC web site at Alcohol Policing Partnership .
ABC protects communities through education, and by administering prevention and enforcement programs designed to increase compliance with California’s alcoholic beverage laws.
ABC is a department of the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency.
