Brought on board as Descanso’s Sous Chef when the restaurant opened in November of 2018, Chef Fonzy de Zuniga was elevated to Executive Chef in fall of 2020.

Born in Mexico City and growing up in San Pedro California, Fonzy began his culinary career as a high school student shucking oysters and cleaning fish at the San Pedro Docks.

Fonzy prides himself on continually pushing the envelope on flavor and presentation while preserving the tradition and authenticity of Descanso’s dishes and recipes.

Descanso Brunch

Chef Sergio Ortega now presents authentic Mexican flavors on a Plancha Weekend Brunch Menu that features classics like Chilaquiles, Huevos Rancheros and Machaca Alambre, made to order in front of guests by Descanso’s talented Taquero Chefs. Those with a sweet tooth can opt for the Conchas Bread Pudding, made with Mexican sweet bread, seasonal berries, pistachio brittle and agave syrup.

Chef Ortega has also created a Weekend Brunch menu to excite non-Plancha diners. In the restaurant’s main dining room and patio, he offers a Salmon Avocado Toast with Steelhead Salmon Confit and Sweet Corn “Pozole Verde” with the season’s most flavorful roasted sweet corn. Guests will also find traditional Mexican breakfast dishes like Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Torta and Burrito Con Huevo.

And since Weekend Brunch wouldn’t be complete without amazing cocktails, guests throughout the restaurant are invited to indulge in Bottomless Mimosas that come with a choice of Pineapple, Guava or Orange Juice, or other brunchy beverages, including the Bloody Maria, Divine Swine, and Will You Accept this Rosé?
