Perhaps motivated by a mild winter, consumers increased their visits to restaurants and other commercial food service businesses according to The NPD Group, a leading market research company. The company reported a 1 percent increase in the first quarter of the year, mostly from increased check averages.

The increase however, is not equal among businesses. The growth was confined to the quick service restaurant with a 3 percent increase, and fine dining/upscale hotel segments with a 6 percent increase. The midscale/family dining and casual dining restaurants continued to struggle.Midscale/family dining restaurants saw a 3 percents decrease and casual dining saw a 2 percent decrease.
