South Coast Plaza to Get a New Udon Noodle Concept

South Coast Plaza is pleased to announce the November 2018 opening of Marugame Udon, a unique concept from Japan of made-to-order udon noodles that guests customize in a counter service format.

Marugame, Japan’s premier udon shop and an Orange County exclusive, makes its noodles onsite with proprietary cooking equipment imported from Japan. The staff cook and serve fresh batches of udon noodles in an open kitchen. Guests make selections from various types of broth, proteins, and garnishes to top the hot or cold udon.  Assorted tempura and rice balls (musubi) may be added. The well-priced menu and quick service with personalized interaction create a bustling ambience.

“Marugame Udon is a terrific addition to our evolving collection of international restaurants,” said Debra Gunn Downing, spokeswoman for South Coast Plaza. “With its emphasis on authenticity and quality, and its global following, Marugame is a wonderful fit. The timing is ideal, given how the udon concept is in the foodie spotlight.”

The restaurant will occupy a 3,000-square-foot space located on the lower level of the Sears Wing. It is named after the city, Marugame, located in the Kagawa prefecture in Japan, which is known for the Sanuki-style udon noodles served at Marugame Udon. The signature dish, Nikutama Udon (image attached), is sweet beef served with onsen tamago (hot spring egg) that adds a creamy texture when mixed with the noodles.
