Let’s celebrate the Chinese New Year by featuring Asian cuisine at our February potluck party!

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is sometimes called the Lunar New Year, especially by people outside China. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month, which occurs on February 14 this year.

According to ancient Chinese astrology, Lunar New Year 2010 is known as the Year of the Tiger. If you were born in 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 or 2010, you were born under the sign of the tiger. Like the tiger, you are one of the most caring and thoughtful signs in the Chinese zodiac. You have a lot to say on the best way to right society’s wrongs, and quite capable of defending children, friends, and loved ones against all enemies.

The holiday marks not only a new beginning but also the start of huge multicourse feasts. Large groups of family and friends gather to imbibe and eat sumptuous meals of special dishes considered auspicious because they represent wealth, luck, happiness, and long lifei¢â‚¬’¢everything we all hope for in a new year.

Bring a dish of some sort of Chinese or Asian-inspired cuisine to share with 6 to 8 people. Feel free to bring beer or wine, too, if you like. It’s best to pair light to medium-bodied whites wines, and perhaps reds with lower tannins, as too much tanin can clash with the salt and spice of the dish. A semisweet Reislings pairs exceptionally well with dishes seasoned with ginger and other spices. Beer and ales also pair well with Chinese food.

LOCATION: We’ll be gathering in Doerte and Jon’s lovely home in Huntington Beach. C’mon – for those of you who live in central or south Orange County, Huntington Beach is not too far away! Those of us who live in Huntington Beach are able to make it to parties in Lake Forest or Mission Viejo or Anaheim. Now it’s your turn to make the drive. The home is located just off the 405 freeway, and is easy to reach.

DONATION: We ask a donation of $2.50 per member and $3.50 per guest, to cover expenses. You may pay by using Pay Pal or a credit/debit card when you rsvp for the event.

NOTE: We ask that people please volunteer to be either a) part of the set-up team that arrives at 6:30 pm, or b) part of the clean-up crew at 11:00 pm, so that our hosts are not swamped with doing all the work by themselves.
